Deloitte Social Impact Practice Helps Clients Tackle Societal Challenges

Deloitte recently formed a Social Impact Practice to help clients deal with pressing global issues such as food security, health, education, clean water and the environment.“We created the social impact business because we saw a market opportunity for a number of reasons,” said Jerry O’Dwyer, leader of Deloitte’s Social Impact Practice. “One is, as we looked around at what’s going on with our clients, the megatrend we see is a blurring of the lines that have historically defined the social sector, the private sector and the public sector. Increasingly our commercial clients have to step into what appears to be a void, from the inability of public sector governments to solve certain social issues, whether it’s education, workforce training, etc.”


Investigation: The Government’s Funding Of Kids Company

The National Audit Office has published the findings from its investigation into the government’s funding of Kids Company. The public sector has provided funding to Kids Company for at least 15 years, although the government’s records suggest the charity started applying for public sector funding as early as 1996. On 5 August 2015, Kids Company closed and was subsequently wound up as it was insolvent.

Canada’s most populous province has become a leader in the social enterprise sector in North America, with over 10,000 social enterprises in operation employing an estimated 160,000 people. Ontario’s government has leant considerable support to the sector, directly and indirectly, to make this happen. Ontario is piloting social finance tools including social impact bonds, community loans (incentives for employers to hire people with disabilities or other barriers to employment), a Social Impact Voucher Pilot Program to provide training to eligible social entrepreneurs, and a $4 million Social Enterprise Demonstration Fund (SEDF) to provide funding and support to early-stage, high-growth social enterprises in the province.

Under the patronage of Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister and Chairman of Emirates Foundation, Emirates Foundation on Tuesday launched its third annual Youth Philanthropy Summit, under the theme, “Maximising Impact through Deploying Top Talent.”. On its first day, the summit united a wide range of participants from local, regional and global business experts, government representatives, youth, philanthropy professionals and social investment experts, to discuss key trends impacting the future of the philanthropy sector and the role of talent in delivering impact and sustainability. The summit was inaugurated by Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport and managing director of the Emirates Foundation.
